Keeping Up with the Cool Kids: Navigating Today's Art Trends

What’s the buzz?

Hey there, bee friends! It's time to dive into the latest and greatest art trends that are making waves right now. In this post, we'll explore some of the buzz worthiest styles and movements that are shaping the art world.

Trend 1: Hyperlocal Art

Ever heard of "homegrown" art? That's basically what hyperlocal art is all about. It's art that's inspired by a specific community or place. Think of it as giving your hometown a creative makeover. From murals on the walls to sculptures in the park, hyperlocal art can really make a place feel special. More and more cities are commissioning artists to beautify their communities and it is amazing to see. Check with your local and state governments to see if there are any calls for artists or commission work available! You will be surprised to see how many places are actually looking. Try googling your community and the words “art commissions” or “artists requests.” Those worked the best for me here in San Diego!

Trend 2: Digital Art and NFTs

If you're into tech, you'll love this trend. Digital art is taking the world by storm, and NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are giving artists a new way to sell their work online. It's like having your own digital art gallery! Now I admit, I have not have much success in this market, but if you do it right, you might be surprised at what you can do!

NFT artists and collectors often find each other on social media and other community based apps like Discord. If you are looking for some inspiration or proof that this is a big market, check out Foundation.com or OpenSea.com. Both sites are hosting sites that host the sales of your works.

For more information, take a deep dive into NFTs, what they are, and why they are so profitable in the right situations.

A word of caution: If anyone randomly messages you that you are a great artist and they want to purchase your work as an NFT, this is likely a scam. True NFT collectors build off of relationships over time, first by purchasing on Foundation or OpenSea and interacting with the artist. I have had over twenty offers for NFTs this year and all have been scams. Be cautious and if it seems too good to be true, it is. (One offered me $12,000 for one of my images. RED FLAG)

Trend 3: Sustainable Art

Let's talk green art! Sustainable art is all about using eco-friendly materials and practices. It's a great way to make a difference and create art that's not only beautiful but also good for the planet. Cool art supply companies have been popping up that offer sustainable/more eco-friendly alternatives that in the past. For example, a company called Tomorrow’s Artist help to reduce the amount of paint ending up in landfills by recycling paint in a high end way.

Other more mainstream companies such as Liquitex, Michaels or even Amazon, have see a rise in recycled or ecofriendly canvases! Bamboo seems to be making a mark as a new painting surface, as is recycled plastic. These might be fun to try out and, if you like them, make the switch.

Ever heard of "two heads are better than one"? That's the idea behind collaborative art. When artists work together, they can create some truly amazing and unique pieces. Try working with other artists to combine your skills, imagination, and talents. Tag me on Instagram with anything you make! I would love to see! Here is my Instagram!
